2018 Doors Open Winnipeg 8th Annual Peoples' Choice Awards
It was a time to celebrate at the 2018 Doors Open Winnipeg 8th Annual People's Choice Awards and Volunteer Reception at the historic Millennium Centre. Heritage Winnipeg hosted the event, handing out awards and thanking the dedicated volunteers in attendance who helped to make Doors Open Winnipeg a successful event.
The People's Choice Awards represent five categories, Best Restoration, Best Guided Tour or Programming, Best Architecture, Best Experience and the Hidden Gem. Online voting was open to the public, showcasing 93 amazing buildings, tours and events. Votes poured in the week following Doors Open Winnipeg, making for a close race in several of the categories. In the end, the votes were tallied and the winners were rewarded for their efforts with framed original drawings of their buildings by local artist Robert Sweeney.

As of May 23, 2018, The National Trust for Canada launched the 2018 Top Ten Endangered List of historic buildings. This year, the former Carnegie Library and City of Winnipeg Archives is on the list. The Carnegie Library, built in 1905 with a $75,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie, was severely damaged by a rainstorm in 2013 while undergoing renovations. Heritage Winnipeg held the 33rd Annual Preservation Awards in celebration of National Heritage Day and Louis Riel Day in the Manitoba Legislative Building Rotunda on Monday, February 19, 2018. Six buildings were recognized at the event, with the individuals and institutions behind their conservation success being honoured with awards. 2018 Heritage Winnipeg Annual Preservation Awards
Since 1985, Heritage Winnipeg has sponsored an annual awards program that seeks to recognize those people dedicated to the protection, restoration and conservation of Winnipeg's built heritage. Awards are also given to owners of heritage structures who seek to sensitively restore their buildings so that they become a productive element of the economical, cultural and social fabric of the community.
Awards are presented in three basic categories:
- Distinguished Service Award
This award recognizes the special contribution of individuals or organizations that have demonstrated a concerted effort and leadership in protecting, conserving, promoting or communicating the historic and/or architectural values of Winnipeg's built heritage.
- Heritage Conservation Award
This award recognizes the special efforts and excellence in specific projects to protect, conserve and reuse structures of high historic or architectural value. Heritage Conservation Awards may be given specifically for commercial, institutional or residential projects that involve the sensitive and adaptive re-use of these structures and provide for their long-term protection.
Heritage Conservation Awards may be given to the owners of commercial, institutional or residential structures with historical and/or architectural value and who provide long-term protection and conservation of key architectural elements for these structure and their sensitive adaptive use. Special recognition may also be given to consultants and contractors of the project selected for an award.
In the case of a successful residential project, a special award will be given in the honour of C.W. Chivers, a well-known Winnipeg architect who designed buildings such as All Saint's Church, Balmoral Hall and the Assiniboine Park Pavilion.
- Youth Category
This award recognizes the special contribution of non-professionals under the age of 25.

Heritage Winnipeg is proud to have worked with Brock Coutts in successfully preserving the Oak Room from the St. Regis Hotel! The Oak Room will be incorporated into Coutts' purposed whisky distillery, Patent 5, which will be located in the Dominion Express Company Building, a heritage building at 108-112 Alexander Avenue. Please visit the CBC's website to read the rest the full article.With just weeks before the building is set to be demolished, Heritage Winnipeg is hoping to preserve the grandeur of the St. Regis Hotel's Oak Room.
Just as its name says, the century-old banquet area is extensively panelled in oak, where it has a storied history on the first floor of the old hotel on Smith Street.
Fortress Real Developments plans to build a commercial space and parkade after the demolition of the building begins in August
"What we'd like to see is some help or some support with the city and maybe someone in the private sector to help us dismantle the room, preserve it ... ultimately to be showcased in another heritage building," said Cindy Tugwell, executive director of Heritage Winnipeg

The People's Choice Awards represent five categories, Best Restoration, Best Guided Tour or Programming, Best Architecture, Best Experience and the Hidden Gem. Online voting was open to the public, showcasing 91 amazing buildings and walking tours. Hundreds of votes poured in the week following Doors Open Winnipeg, making for a close race in several of the categories. In the end, the votes were tallied and the winners were rewarded for their efforts with framed original drawings of their buildings by local artist Robert Sweeney.

Closing the Doors on the 14th Annual Doors Open Winnipeg Event
It was a time to celebrate at the 2017 Doors Open Winnipeg Volunteer Reception and People's Choice Awards at the King's Head Pub in the Exchange. Heritage Winnipeg hosted the event, thanking the dedicated volunteers in attendance who helped to make Doors Open Winnipeg a successful event. Over 500 volunteers helped make this year's event the biggest, most successful event to date. On December 1, 2016, a Private Members Bill to create tax credits for historic places was tabled in the House of Commons. Bill C-323 – An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act (Rehabilitation of Historic Property) – is based on a great US success story with a 40- year track record. This Bill presents an historic opportunity to tell elected officials from every political party that Canada’s historic places matter, and that federal actions can help save and renew them.

These two tax measures would transform the economic fundamentals for renewing historic places. In the process would create more skilled jobs and generate less carbon and new construction.
